The Month Cash Flow Was Tightest, She Went for a Massage
The founder's version of cutting losses: repair the founder first.
Her co-founder sent her — nearly ordered her. The company had two months of runway left, she'd been sleeping four hours a night for three weeks, her jaw ached from clenching and her temples throbbed. The co-founder said: go repair yourself first. The company will not die of your ninety minutes.
She lay down carrying guilt. Before the session, the concierge didn't offer comfort; she laid out the process in precise detail — which step, how long, stoppable at any time. The founder said that certainty was what let her loosen: for once, ninety minutes were entirely inside her control.
The long warm-gel strokes began at her back, which was rigid as a board. The therapist didn't force anything — layer by layer, temperature and patience. Somewhere in the middle she slept; she woke when a hot towel settled on her face, and the funding problem that had been spinning for three weeks was suddenly quieter.
In the car afterwards, coffee in hand, she re-ordered her thoughts one by one. What she understood that night wasn't a grand truth — it was that she was the company's most important asset too. And assets get maintained, not drained.
The company made it through that month. She put a monthly session in her calendar. The note beside it is one word: maintenance.

All you have to say is: “I need to be looked after.”
We will take care of the rest.
