Off the Red-Eye, I Soaked the Jet Lag Away
A frequent flyer's self-rescue manual: land, bathe, sleep, return to full power.
She flies forty times a year; her suitcase lives half-packed. This time she landed from Asia into a Los Angeles morning while her body was still in the departure city's midnight. She texted the concierge: is there any way to make me able to sleep tonight?
The studio arranged for early evening was close to her home. First came a long hot fragrant bath; steam carrying flowers upward, and she said the twelve hours of airplane compression dissolved by half right there. The therapist slowed everything deliberately; warm stones lined her spine, their heat seeping into a back that had been belted into a seat for half a day.
Midway through the body care she fell asleep — the complete kind, without dreams. The therapist softened every movement to nothing but warmth and coverage and let her sleep through the reserved rest time. When she woke, the sky outside was fully dark. She blinked: how long was I out?
She said she never sleeps that deeply in hotel beds — her head stays full of tomorrow's meetings. Here, there was no tomorrow. There was only temperature.
Now 'book a session on landing day' is written into her travel routine. Like charging a phone, she says. Charging the body.

All you have to say is: “I need to be looked after.”
We will take care of the rest.
