After Recovery, She Moved Back Into Her Body
After an operation: how to befriend a body that has changed.
She declared her situation up front when booking: an operation six months earlier, recovery going well — and yet her body no longer felt like hers. Scars, tightness, areas she didn't dare touch. The concierge noted it all carefully and suggested starting with the most everyday full-body relaxation, the pace adjusted to her feelings at all times.
At the first session the therapist avoided every area she'd named and worked only in warm compresses and gentle long strokes over shoulders, back and limbs. Being handled that carefully made her eyes sting — since the illness, her body had been an object of examination and discussion. For the first time, it was simply treated tenderly.
After several visits, she herself asked to try the full ritual. Before the core passage, the therapist narrated every step in advance and confirmed, and confirmed again. She said that in that moment she made a kind of peace with her body: after everything it had carried, it was willing — slowly, newly — to trust touch again.
To be clear: nothing here is medical, and her recovery belongs to her doctors and to time. But 'liking her own body again' — outside of medicine, she found a little of that road here.
She comes monthly now. A body, she says, is like a house you've lived in for years: after repairs, you live in it more carefully — and more gratefully.

All you have to say is: “I need to be looked after.”
We will take care of the rest.
