On Her Birthday, She Gave Herself 'The Queen Returns'
A 150-minute birthday gift: skip the candles — make the wish on yourself first.
She booked a month ahead: her birthday, the longest session, and she told no one. Every previous birthday had been scheduled full by other people — family, friends, obligations. This year, no.
When she arrived there was a small bouquet and a handwritten card in the rest area — the concierge team's doing, ceremony kept to exactly the right size. She laughed out loud sinking into the fragrant bath: this, she said, is the correct way to open a birthday — warm yourself first, then be pampered slowly.
The 150 minutes moved at the slowest possible pace: bath, warm compresses, full-body long strokes, the core ritual, a long rest. She slept mid-way and woke as a hot towel settled on her face, having dreamed something light — in the dream she was ten years younger and nothing needed rushing.
At the mirror afterwards, fixing her hair, she said suddenly: I don't seem to have any wishes left. Not because there's nothing she wants — because in that moment she was so content that wishes could wait.
It's her fixed yearly ritual now. The best way to celebrate your own birthday, she says, is to treat yourself as the guest most worth honouring.

All you have to say is: “I need to be looked after.”
We will take care of the rest.
